Pope Francis experienced two episodes of “acute respiratory insufficiency” on Monday as the 88-year-old pontiff continues his fight against pneumonia, Vatican News reported, citing the Holy See Press Office.

In a statement on Monday, the Holy See Press Office said, “Today, the Holy Father suffered two episodes of acute respiratory insufficiency, caused by a significant accumulation of endobronchial mucus and consequent bronchospasm.”

As a result, two bronchoscopies were performed to remove large secretions. Later in the afternoon, non-invasive mechanical ventilation was resumed. Despite the health crisis, Pope Francis remained alert, oriented, and cooperative throughout the treatment.

“The prognosis remains guarded,” the statement added, noting that his test values remained unchanged. This indicated the absence of leukocytosis (a high white blood cell count), suggesting there is no new infection and that the mucus buildup is a consequence of his pre-existing pneumonia.

The episodes were attributed to the bronchi’s reaction, trying to expel the accumulated mucus in an effort to eliminate bacteria. The pontiff’s clinical condition remains complex, and further crises like those experienced on Monday remain a possibility.

Amid his health struggles, Pope Francis made an emotional appeal for peace on March 2, calling war “absurd” and urging prayers for conflict-ridden regions including Ukraine, Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, Myanmar, Sudan, and Kivu.

In an Angelus address prepared while he remains under hospital treatment, the Pope expressed gratitude for the prayers and support he has received during his time of “frailty.” He thanked the faithful for their closeness and encouraged them to continue praying for peace worldwide.

“From here, war appears even more absurd,” he said, bringing attention to the urgent need for reconciliation and humanitarian aid in these troubled areas.

Reflecting on his illness, Pope Francis shared how the experience had taught him to trust in the Lord and empathize more deeply with those who suffer. He expressed heartfelt appreciation for the doctors and healthcare professionals tending to him, recognizing the hidden grace in his condition.

“It is precisely in these moments that we learn even more to trust in the Lord; at the same time, I thank God for giving me the opportunity to share in body and spirit the condition of so many sick and suffering people,” he said.

The Pope also emphasized the importance of fraternal correction, urging the faithful to reflect on their own lives and the way they view others.
